500 word analysis on VIBE the magazine:

The magazine that I have chosen is Vibe; Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine which was founded by a producer named Quincy Jones. To start my analysis, I can see from the front cover that it is a very well known magazine because the title is hidden by the Masthead. This shows that the company must have a well known brand name that they can put an image up to cover part of the title as they know that their readers will know that it is still Vibe magazine. Analyzing the front cover of the magazine I believe that the audience for Vibe would be ageing from about 17 to 25 because the role model on the front of the magazine is Usher who is very well known to a lot of teenagers but also people a little older than teens, it would be a mixture of girls and boys who would be interested in the magazine because it calls out to both sex’s but more boys because of the mentions of the sex survey and sex scandals. The magazine calls out to people who are into Rap and R&B music I can see this as it not only shows Usher but also mentions 50 cent, Nelly and more, the audience that are more likely to read it is young men who are single have passion for R&B music and like to be nosey and see what’s happening in the celebrity world. The magazine could relate to some girls who are into the R&B sounds but also have a passion for the singer usher who is modeled on the front of the magazine it also mentions Ashanti and her new album which they could be into. The cover of the magazine appeals to the audience above by having celebrity names that are a big in the R&B industry but also not only music they have entertainment in the magazine that young minds would like to read about. The magazine cover features the R&B singer Usher alongside the image of the singer is a Cover line describing the article inside the magazine about the artist, this could influence in the target audience to buy the magazine. The cover has a lot of colors which makes the magazine stand out; big names of celebrities are bolder and bigger than other text so that the target audience sees their favorite artists name in the magazine. The magazine has cleverly put in slang words on the cover of the magazine, like swagger; this will target the audience because they are young and so they will understand the words which would help them relate to the magazine. The layout of the magazine is very messy not like other magazines which have a neat layout this will strike the target audience because young minds quickly click to interesting colors and sizes in font which the magazines front cover has. The price of the magazine isn’t a lot so that people younger can afford it as they will probably have jobs unlike other magazines e.g. GQ who are more expensive and are too another set of audience.

Task 3: To what extent should magazines be held responsible for the social ramifications of the representations they offer?

The five magazines covers that I have chosen that are aimed at teenage girls are GL, Seventeen, Candy, Cosmo Girl and Teen Vogue. I have chosen these five magazine covers because I believe that they represent what most teenage magazines are about; the magazines above are the top/popular magazines that most teenage girls would read.

People have now been asking if magazines should be held responsible for the social ramifications of the representations that a magazine offers, someone who would say that magazines should not be held responsible would be the editor in chief or the publisher of a teenage magazine. They would disagree saying that they are just trying to show real life to the teenagers to get them ready for the future, they would say that the magazine could give them ambitions for their future career.

The magazine executives would show that their magazines were nothing to do with social ramifications but only provides entertainment for the teens instead of them getting into trouble they will be more interested in the magazine.  The magazine provides the readers with tips to help them everyday things such as make-up, boy problems etc. The entertainment side of the magazine will interest most teenage girls because you can see from the five magazine covers above that the celebrity faces will influence in them to read the magazine, magazine makers will say that this is a good thing because it will help teenagers to read more and watch less T.V or go on the internet but instead they can read the magazine of the story of the celebrity.

Someone who would disagree with editor in chief/publisher and would say that magazines should be held responsible for the social ramifications of the representations that a magazine offers would be a parent of a teenager who reads any of the magazines above. They would say that its should be held responsible because the magazines have bad impacts on the readers as they try to copy things that are said in the magazine, things like how to dress. These can be a problem to a parent because celebrities don’t where a lot of clothes or where clothes that are very revealing for example what Selena Gomez in wearing in the magazine above the chest is very revealing, a parent would not want their child to where something like that at their age.  Magazines, like the ones above, give tips and also other advice onto how to look your best, they are trying to say without following these tips you will not look your best and will not succeed in life like these celebrities.

A parent of a teenager who reads the magazine will also be worried about other concepts In a magazine, one concept that comes up a lot in teenage magazines are aspects to do with men/boys. A parent would not want their teenage girl to be more interested in boys than other important factors they should be concentrating on such as their education. Not only this but the magazines put tips on how to get guys trying to show that these tips are the only way you will get the right man for you, and by not following these tips you will not get the man of your dreams. A lot teen magazines also have stories to do with nude celebrities or stories, the put a positive incentive on nudeness that a parent would be very angry about.

From looking at the magazines above that I have chosen I can see that magazines should be held responsible for the social ramifications that the magazine offers, I have come to this conclusion because of not only the reasons that I have mentioned in my last paragraph but also because from what I can see the magazine is putting a positive view on girls being lazy with their education and how they can get A’s, this is a not the way to get to teenagers the magazine should be showing ways in which to revise.  Also the seventeen magazine above promotes parties saying how to get the best hair for parties as if you should be always going to parties but also it is showing ways to become thinner this could be putting down a lot of teenagers who are a bigger size and could lead teenage girls into anorexia.  There are also lots of other bad indications on the magazines above for me to conclude that Teenage magazines should be held responsible.

Task 4: IPC Media

The International Publishing Corporation first began from a British dominated publishing industry in the 1950’s, the handful of companies that reigned were the associated Newspapers, Odhams Press Ltd, George Newnes Publishers, C. Arthur Pearson and the Hulton Press. In the late 1950’s Cecil Harmsworth King the chairman of a newspaper group, which included daily mirror, and the Sunday mirror, this newspaper group then changed into Fleet way publications. King then grouped all of the companies, Fleet way, Odhams and Newnes, and combined them to make International Publishing Corporation (IPC), the companies still existed but as IPC subsidiaries.

The IPC Media now produces over 60 Iconic media brands, a third read by women of the UK and 44 % of the men in the UK. IPC produces men, mass market women and up market women magazines. IPC have been associated with a lot of TV magazines in the past they have also been associated with real life magazines and from these they have built their name up to be the company they are now.

IPC might be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine because they have had a lot of experience in the magazine world already they know all the hidden tricks and know the way of getting into the readers minds. IPC would be perfect to be a publisher of a music magazine they could bring new audiences to their company to widen their customers. The IPC have a website also that will help new magazines onto how to get their magazine to be most effective and also the website helps with the planning of the magazine.

An alternative publisher like Bauer may be more appropriate because Bauer Media reaches over nineteen million UK adults across the country with its multiple media channels. Bauer have more than eighty influential media brands which including Heat, Grazia, Closer, MCN, FHM, Parkers, Match, Magic 105.4, Kiss 100, Kerrang and 4Music. This alternate publisher would have more experience in the market of music magazines rather than IPC as Bauer have music magazines that are already very high in the market. They would be more experienced in the music magazine side of the market and would know all the tricks to make the new music magazine successful.
